Rishi Lad, board director, reflects on his journey to becoming a young leader and making an impact.
In today’s fast-changing world, leadership is no longer defined by age or years of experience. Young leaders are stepping into influential roles, bringing fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and a unique energy that’s impossible to ignore.
At just 18, I was appointed as a school governor, and by 19, I became a board of director. These experiences have shown me the immense value of young people in leadership. It’s been both challenging and rewarding, and I hope my journey inspires others to explore their own potential as young leaders.
Each milestone shaped my character, taught me invaluable lessons, and laid the foundation for my leadership journey.
Stepping into leadership roles at a young age came with its share of scepticism and curiosity. Sitting alongside seasoned professionals at 18 was an honour, but it also tested my resilience, adaptability, and decision-making abilities. These roles are not just about titles—they are about creating impact, making tough decisions, and fostering relationships.
Embracing responsibility early has been a transformational experience. It’s taught me lessons that no classroom ever could, preparing me for the challenges and opportunities ahead.
Young leaders bring something invaluable to the table: fresh perspectives and forward-thinking ideas. Free from the constraints of “how it’s always been done,” we often approach challenges with creativity and innovation.
In fields like finance and education, this mindset is crucial. From staying ahead of technological trends to tackling global issues, young leaders can drive the changes needed to build a brighter, more adaptable future.
One area I’m particularly passionate about is financial literacy. I envision a subject called General Finance integrated into mainstream education, teaching student’s essential skills like budgeting, ISAs, pensions, savings, debt management, and investments. Empowering and levelling up young people with this knowledge would not only improve individual financial health but also strengthen society as a whole.
Being a young leader often meant facing scepticism and needing to earn respect from those older and more experienced than me. To overcome this, I focused on preparation, listening, and proving my value through consistent hard work. I backed my ideas with research, demonstrated a willingness to collaborate, and showed genuine respect for the expertise of others. By staying patient and persistent, I turned these challenges into opportunities to grow, gradually earning trust and credibility. These experiences taught me that respect is earned through action, and every obstacle is a chance to refine your leadership skills.
Building a strong network and finding mentors have been game-changers in my journey. Learning from experienced leaders has provided insights and guidance that no book or lecture could offer.
I encourage every aspiring leader to seek out mentors and listen closely to their wisdom. Surround yourself with peers who share your ambitions—together, you’ll push each other to grow and achieve more.
One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of balancing confidence with humility. As young leaders, we are often brimming with enthusiasm and big ideas. While confidence is essential to drive progress, humility is what builds trust and fosters collaboration.
Recognising that there’s always more to learn keeps us grounded and open to growth, ensuring that our leadership remains impactful and inclusive.
Young leaders are not here to simply occupy seats; we’re here to make a difference. Serving on boards has given me the opportunity to influence decisions that directly impact communities and future generations. Whether advocating for youth-friendly policies or introducing new ideas, young leaders can drive meaningful change and leave a lasting legacy.
If you aspire to lead, here are four principles that have guided me:
Most importantly, never give up. Every small step brings you closer to making a significant impact.
I envision a world where young leaders are celebrated for their energy, creativity, and innovation. Across industries like finance and education, young voices can pave the way for solutions that prioritise adaptability and inclusivity.
By stepping into leadership roles now, we can inspire future generations and prove that age is no barrier to success.
Young leadership is not without its challenges, but it’s a journey worth embarking on. The world needs passionate, forward-thinking leaders who aren’t afraid to challenge the status quo.
Believe in yourself, embrace every opportunity, and remember my motto: “Believe It, Achieve It.”
